Inevitably, as every year, we are heading toward the end of the year holidays with the usual mountain of greeting cards, packages, wrapping paper, and cut holiday trees. That adds up to a lot of DEATH for trees and our forests as well as increasing pollution and CO2 emissions. A change always starts from within; this year, let’s GIVE A GIFT OF LIFE!
Here at Eclectic, we have decided to do just that: give life by planting one tree for every person we would have otherwise sent a card or a gift, and we will send them an electronic picture of THEIR new TREE. Please, join us in our effort and GIVE A GIFT OF LIFE - PLANT A TREE!
WHY? Because WE CARE more than ever about our future and our environment. Here are some statistics that ignited our concern over the environmental impact of printing, mailing, and delivering greetings cards:
When you think about processing or creating greeting cards, you will be surprised how much damage a small piece of paper can cause. Imagine all the cards, all the stamps, paint, ink, gasoline, energy, dead trees, and generated CO2 -- there is something to worry about.

UK Charities estimate that £50m is raised for good causes through the sales of charity Christmas cards each year. Comparing to 30,000 tons of CO2 created by those cards, would it be far more charitable to protect the environment and switch to ELECTRONIC CARDS?
The U.K. conservation charity Woodland Trust runs an annual campaign to collect and recycle Christmas cards to raise awareness of recycling and collect donations from corporate sponsors and supporters. All recycled cards help raise money to plant more trees. In the 12 years that the Woodland Trust Christmas Card Recycling Scheme has been running, more than 600 million cards have been recycled. This has enabled the Woodland Trust to plant more than 141,000 trees, save over 12,000 tons of paper from landfill and stop over 16,000 tons of CO2 from going into the atmosphere – the equivalent to taking more than 5,000 cars off the road for a year – but this is a small contribution
As we don’t have reliable information for most of the countries, we will just assume that the rest of the world would match the US in cards usage, which would give us approximately 14 billion holiday cards for the entire world. The approximate pile of trash is more than 28.000 TONS, over 34.000 TONS of CO2. This is without counting dead trees, packaging, plastic trees, all the energy and pollution from the woodlands, through paper factories, shipping, storage, printing, postage, delivery and trash processing. There must be a better, cleaner, greener way to say THANK YOU!

As our future is the affair of each and every one of us, we have chosen to become totally PAPERLESS office. To stop unnecessary gas usage and CO2 emissions all our employees will TELECOMMUTE. How we manage our life reflects in how we manage our business and how we respect our clients, friends and the entire world.
By deciding not to use any paper support, we calculated that we are saving at least 2 trees every year. If every company in the world would do the same, our planet will be replenished with oxygen creating trees.
By our decision to telecommute we are contributing even more to the protection of our planet and environment: no transportation – individual or in common – so no carbon emission, saving on heat, water and electricity for additional office space, reducing office expenses thus leaving more money to contribute to our Foundation. Savings on man hours are tremendous, instead of spending several hours in stressful commute environment, our employees can enjoy comfortable working space in their own homes, more flexible hours and better productivity. Savings allow us to increase salaries and to hire more employees. We believe this is really ethical and sustainable way of doing business, suitable for our generation conscientious of our environment and planning for the better future.

When Bad Hispanic Advertising Happens to Good Companies
Unfortunately, many companies miss the mark when advertising to Latinos. Usually it’s because corporate decision-makers are not paying close enough attention to their Hispanic marketing efforts. They simply don’t understand or carefully consider Hispanic cultural nuances when planning their outreach efforts.
Whether they are Spanish translation errors or subtle (sometimes not-so-subtle) cultural misinterpretations, these marketing mishaps are a waste of advertising dollars, often requiring additional investment to “clean up the mess” and start fresh with a whole new campaign to reach this market segment.
Some classic gaffes from the past:
* When “translated” into Spanish, the Dairy Association’s astoundingly successful “Got Milk?” advertising campaign asked Latino consumers “Are you Lactating?”
* During the Pope’s visit to Miami, a local T-shirt company printed shirts that read, “I saw the Potato” because in Spanish the article “the” can be either masculine (el papa) or feminine (la papa); on the T-shirt they used the feminine, which describes the tuber rather than the head of the Catholic Church!
* In the late 1970’s Braniff Airlines tried to promote their all-leather interiors by translating the English slogan “Fly in leather.” Unfortunately, the literal translation invited Spanish-speaking passengers to “Fly Naked.”
Economies rise and fall regardless of the language spoken in the country. The only way to have a continually successful business is to market to more than one country and in more than one language. A majority of the world’s population does not speak English and there is not one palpable reason to believe that they should. Just because England and America are the birthplaces of capitalism does not mean that they are the only countries with large consumer bases. In fact we can safely say that right now America has one of the worst economies in the entire world. The American companies that are surviving are those that have established a large network of international clientel and who have additionally learned the importance of domestically marketing in more than one language. The second quarter results of major American companies prove this point. Dupont’s domestic sales are up a measly 5% while their international sales have increased by 18%. Over at IBM domestic sales increased 8%, while those in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) rose 20% and the Asia Pacific (APAC) sector grew 16%. Additionally, in 2007 two thirds of IBM’s total revenue was netted overseas. The same goes for brands such as PepsiCo, Caterpillar, and General Motors.
Follow Through: The message is overwhelmingly clear. In order to succeed companies must translate and localize their websites. This is not as simple and straightforward as it sounds. You must make sure that you are capable of following through with your customers in their mother tongues. This includes the style of web forms, emails, and phone services you provide. Many of today’s top advisors suggest that the best approach is to use a translation agency or specialty marketing firm like EC COM to manage these requests.

Hispanic? This is a term used by the US Census Bureau to refer to residents who speak Spanish, who migrated from a Spanish-speaking country, or whose antecedents came from such a country. In USA, there are actually 23 Million Hispanic people using Internet. Does your web site SPEAK to them? What does it have to do with you?
There is over 40 million Hispanic people living in the US today. Hispanic owned businesses and their income will increase to almost half a trillion dollars by the year 2010. This is a good reason to start building your presence in the Hispanic market. The best way to do that, believe it or not, is TRANSLATION. You can't ignore that their language of choice is Spanish, and that Hispanic population represents a huge potential expansion for every business.

September is Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States. The celebration actually runs from mid-September to mid-October in honor of the September 15 anniversaries of national independence in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile declared their independence on September 16 and 18, respectively. Our contribution to HISPANIC population: 15% discount on all translation projects involving Spanish language started before end of November.

One of the greatest man this small country ever head, the great musician, philosopher, member of parliament, dedicated patriot, undisputed greatest voice of Croatia is now silent. We remember him with lot of love.
He was born on August 3, 1936 in Sibenik (Croatia). He graduated from the Zagreb Faculty of Philosophy and the Paris Institute for High International Studies (professor of Philosophy and Italian language and literature). He was a member of the Croatian Parliament from December 22, 2003 until May 10, 2006.
